Through the perspective of ultras, Tobias Jones creates a fascinating portrait of Italian society and its love for football. He presents fans of major clubs such as Juventus, Torino, Lazio, Roma and Genoa, as well as supporters of lesser known teams from Cosenza and Catania. By entering their world, he reveals the dark side of football fanaticism - violence and political extremism - but at the same time highlights their passion, humor, solidarity and unique lifestyle.
Italian ultras groups are considered some of the best organized and most brutal in European football. Some evolved into criminal organizations involved in illegal ticket trading, drugs and even murders. Often acting as enforcers for the mafia, they also played a significant role in the rise of far right movements. They claim to be revolutionaries standing against the repressive state apparatus and the commercialization of modern football. They insist that only within their world can one find true identity, solidarity and the idea of uncorrupted sport. They stress that they guard not only their teams but also neglected neighborhoods and people who have been excluded from them.
